How to speed up a network connection to the KeyWatcher
Locate the HOSTS file which on Windows XP, Vista and 7 is located at: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
-
If your network experiences outages
Some networks are slugish or have intermitent connection issues. You can modify a setting to force the software to attempt connecting for a specified number of trys. Navigate to the folder where your database(s) are stored. Each KeyWatcher system will have one mdb file type and one kpi file. Locate the kpi for the desired system and find this line.
<key name="MaxCommErrCt">10</key>
Simply change the number such as 10 in the example above to a higher number.

How to Change Your Server
- Assuming your database(s) is stored at "\\sllvh04\KeyWatcher" you should first back up this parent and all children.
- In the example below "\\sllvh04\KeyWatcher" would be replaced with the new server path. We recommend you avoid
spaces in the name and as well as avoiding map drives. We strongly recommend UNC paths rather then mapped drives.

The Key-pro.ini configuration file is stored as shown below and must be modified on EVERY client.
Windows XP
C:\Program Files\Morse Watchman\KeyPro III
Windows 7 or Vista
C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Morse Watchman\KeyPro III
- Of course do the obvious and make sure that all client copies are closed.
Errors
-
Process Performance Related Error
(The “Process Performance” errors are a product of the Windows OS and not the KeyPro software.)

-
Error in Open Connection: The ConnectionString Property Has Not Been Initialized
This error means that within the Database folder a KPI configuration file exists, but the required accompaning MDB database file is missing.
-
MS DotNet errors "Path Not Found" or "Access to the Path is Denied"
- Please understand this error has nothing to do with KeyPro.
- Ignore the first paragraph as it is generic Microsoft DotNet error.
- Never click "Continue", only Close.
- Reviewing the "Details" will also not be of any help.
This is an easy error as it literally describes your problem. Whoever is logged in does not have access to the path where the database is stored. If you attempted to access this path outside of KeyPro using Windows Explorer you would also get an error. In laymens terms, it would be no different than a MS Word or Excel doc stored on the network that you can't access. So this has nothing to do with Keypro.
- Possible causes would be:
- the users permissions have changed
- the server name has been changed
- the mapped drive is lost
- the network is down

Download ZIP filePutty for HyperTerminal sessions in Windows 7:
With the advent of Windows 7 Hyperterminal is no longer available in Windows. However, this free 3rd party app called "Putty" is a great easy replacement as well as offering Telnet ability.
Download EXE fileHow to install the built-in "Telnet" in Windows 7 you must install it (Windows disk not required):
- Control Panel
- All Control Panel Items
- "Programs and Features”
- Click the “Turn Windows features on or off” link on the left part of the screen.
- You will want to check where it says “Telnet Client”
-
Here is how to get HyperTerminal on to Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit):
On the Windows 7 box make a new folder under:
- C:\Program Files\HyperTerminal (for 32-bit)
- C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal (for 64-bit)
From a Windows XP box and copy the following 3 files to the folder that was just created on the Windows 7 box:
- C:\Program Files\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe
- C:\WINDOWS\system32\hypertrm.dll
- C:\WINDOWS\Help\hypertrm.chm
- C:\WINDOWS\system32hticons.dll (required to have icons in hyperterminal)
Now just run hypertrm.exe to use Hyperterminal on Windows 7.
You can also simply copy over the files that are in XP Mode OS, however Hyperterminal doesn’t work in XP Mode.
You can download the files you need from this hyperterminal external link or here from our site
A quick side note if you have problems getting your USB to Serial connection working under Windows 7 try getting the drivers here.
The PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v10518.zip should work.
