Biometric Hand Readers
Schlage HandKey II Biometric Hand Reader
Schlage (formerly Recognition Systems, Inc.) HandKey brings the security and convenience of biometrics to any access control application at an affordable price. HandKeys verify people, not a card, key or PIN that can easily be transferred to someone else. Allows for 512 users standard, with optional memory expansion.
- Eliminate the expense and hassle of card based systems
- Unparalleled accuracy and reliability
- Fast, easy enrollment and use
- Easily networked, integrated with existing systems
Biometrics technology is the science of using the traits of a person's body as a password, confirming the person's identity by a biological feature and matching it with a digital file. Recognition Systems biometrics hand readers provide improved security, accuracy, and convenience for access control (the hand readers provide a fail-safe method to ensure that the person who enters isn't merely carrying someone else's access card or PIN), for Time and Attendance (the handreaders improve payroll accuracy and simplicity by eliminating "buddy-punching" and providing centralized computer data storage), for identification, (the handreaders guarantee that the people in a secured area actually belong there.)
- We look at the size and shape of your hand
- We analyze 31,000 points
- We make over 90 unique measurements
- We measure lengths, widths thickness and surface area
Below are the advantages of a hand geometry reader over most other biometric scanning devices such as fingerprint and eye-scanning.
- Surprisingly these systems are lower cost when compared to card swipe or proximity readers. This is because the ongoing replacement costs of those cards is eliminated.
- Because the template of a hand cannot be reproduced in any way, the Civil libertarians will have no fear regarding the privacy of citizens.
- It actually adjusts to normal changes in the hand such as weight loss or gain, cuts, bruises, band-aids, and rings.
- Very low error rate
- In a study of biometric devices done by Sandia National labs, hand geometry came out on top.
- When compared to access cards there are no concerns about lost cards or ongoing replacement costs of cards.
- Fail-safe method to ensure that the person who enters isn't merely carrying someone else's access card or PIN
IDENTITY VERIFICATION
There is a fundamental rule of access control that is often overlooked...
CARD READERS CAN'T IDENTIFY PEOPLE, neither can...
- KEYPADS
- PIN CODES
- BRASS KEYS
- DOCUMENTS
However...
- PEOPLE CAN IDENTIFY PEOPLE.
- DOGS CAN IDENTIFY PEOPLE.
- BIOMETRICS CAN IDENTIFY PEOPLE.
- And Biometrics does it best!!

Hand Geometry Preferred Biometric in 45% of All Access Control/Time and Attendance Applications
Hand Geometry Preferred Biometric in 45% of All Access Control/Time and Attendance Applications
Frost & Sullivan’s World Biometric Report 2002 Shows that IR Recognition Systems Outsold All Fingerprint and Facial Systems Combined for Access Control and Time and Attendance Applications
CAMPBELL, CALIF. – September 9, 2002 – IR Recognition Systems, the biometric component of Ingersoll-Rand’s (IR) Security & Safety Group’s Electronic Access Control (EACD), was once again confirmed as the world’s largest supplier of biometric readers for access control and time and attendance applications by Frost & Sullivan’s World Biometric Report 2002. The report shows that, in 2001, hand geometry readers continued to be the dominant biometric technology for access control and time and attendance applications. Hand geometry readers positively identify users by the shape and size of their hands.
For access control applications, HandReaders provide a fail-safe method to ensure that the person who enters isn't merely carrying someone else's access card or PIN. For time and attendance, HandReaders improve payroll accuracy and reduce costs by eliminating "buddy-punching" and removing the cost and administrative problems of badges. For identification applications, HandReaders guarantee that people are actually who they say they are.
“HandReaders from Recognition Systems have shown themselves to be easy to use, accepted more readily by users, more accurate and much harder to deceive than other biometric technologies,” reports Martin Huddart, IR Recognition Systems general manager. “It only makes sense that hand geometry is the number one biometric technology for access control and time and attendance applications.”
Over 70,000 IR Recognition Systems HandReaders are installed throughout the world in a wide variety of applications. The 1996 Olympic Games utilized HandReaders to protect access to the Olympic Village. More than 65,000 people were enrolled and over 1 million transactions were handled in 28 days.
Since 1991, at San Francisco International Airport, HandReaders have produced more than 100 million biometric verifications, with more than 50,000 produced on high volume days. HandReaders span the entire airport, securing more than 180 doors and verifying the identity of more than 18,000 employees. The use of biometrics at San Francisco is airport-wide and fully integrated into the primary access control system.
In Israel, Ben Gurion Airport’s award-winning “trusted traveler” biometric system has reduced waiting times at security checkpoints from hours to just seconds. The program handles 15 percent of Ben Gurion passengers. Nearly 100,000 Israeli citizens (2 percent of Israel’s population) have enrolled in the program with 50,000 processed each month. Over 1 million authentications have been produced in just the first two years of operation with the HandReaders.
In the United Kingdom, Her Majesty’s Prisons rely on the HandReaders for prisoner and visitor tracking. Colleges, such as the University of Georgia, use HandReaders for on-campus meal programs, safeguard access to dormitories and protect their computer centers. Hospitals utilize HandReaders for both access control and payroll accuracy. More than 900 HandReaders control client and employee access to special areas of Italian banks and over 100 units perform similar functions in Russia.
In applications large and small, HandReaders are used for time and attendance. Over 20,000 Owens Illinois employees punch in and out each day using the HandReader. Millions upon millions of transactions have been generated, each biometrically verified. Krispy Kreme Doughtnuts uses HandReaders for tracking employee hours at over 30 individual stores.
HandReaders allow members to access clubs around the globe without having to remember to carry a card. Many childcare centers use HandReaders to verify the identity of parents and safeguard the children left in their care.

EN-200: Ethernetcommunication option
The EN-200 Ethernet module enables the HandKey terminals to communicate with the host computer over an Ethernet Local Area Network via TCP/IP.
- Reduces communications costs
- Simplifies setup
- Uses standard network protocol
The EN-200 Ethernet module allows RSI's HandKey™ terminals to communicate with host computer over an Ethernet Local Area Network via TCP/IP. This can greatly reduce installation and communications costs by taking advantage of a company's existing data network. Installation is further simplified because the module is completely internal to our biometric terminals. This eliminates the need for an additional power supply and simplifies installation.
Set up is fast and simple. An RJ-45 connector is used to connect to 10Base-T network wiring. The IP address and gateway are set via the terminal set-up menu and keypad. The appropriate subnet mask is automatically generated for the selected IP address. No special set-up programs are required at the host.
Networking flexibility is maximized because multiple hand readers may still be daisy chained via 4-wire RS-485 to a terminal using the Ethernet module. This allows for a remote location with up to 32 terminals to communicate with the host via a single Ethernet connection.
Application Program support for the Ethernet module is available for both Windows 95 and Windows NT environments (32 bit) through RSI's communications API Version 2.20 or higher.
- Network Interface: 10 Base-T (RJ-45)
- Network Protocol: TCP/IP
